The third grade class that is influencing the student learner profiles contains a total of thirty-three students. The demographics of this class has changed multiple times throughout the first semester. The major changes include loosing a higher-level male student (transferred schools) and loosing an ESE female (switched to another class that can meet her individual needs). The class has also gained three new students (two female and one male), the male student cam from Mexico. He is currently reading one grade below level in Spanish and does not read or speak any English. There are now three ESOL students within the class and two possible ESE students. The race or ethnicity of a majority of the class is While and Hispanic (although the others include Asian or Pacific Islander, African American, and Multi-racial). Over 75% of the class is receiving free or reduced lunch and are considered to maintain a low or middle socioeconomic status. The most popular subject as reported by the students is science (with some discrepancies). All of the students are receiving response to intervention (RtI) stage two during P.R.I.D.E. time, during this time they are either receiving fluency, comprehension, phonics, or vocabulary instruction. A major challenge throughout the class is concentration and comprehension (a good portion of the class is attending comprehension RtI time, and the students that are receiving stage two RtI are also receiving comprehension guidance). The interest reported by the interest survey report that the majority of the class enjoys playing outside, science (as reported previously), and does not enjoy academic reading.
Through knowing and understanding this demographic information (including student interests) it will assist me in planning for lessons (and in general). Through knowing the race or ethnicity of each student, I am able to include their identity throughout any given lesson, which will assist in increasing student interest. By knowing what they enjoy to do in their spare time I am able to incorporate such activities in planning. A major interest that will influence planning is the students’ favorite subject (science). This may be the case because science usually has more activities, which the students enjoy to complete and observe. By remembering this assumption and through cross content curriculum the students will able to enjoy other subjects incorporated with their favorite subject. After collecting and reflecting on the demographic and student interest information I am able to better understand how to assist my students in achieving academic success.
